Giants open commanding 2-0 lead in World Series

Matt CainSomebody should tell C.J. Wilson and Matt Cain that they’re not aces in this World Series. At least not yet. After both Cliff Lee and Tim Lincecum failed to deliver the goods in Game 1, Wilson and Cain combined to throw 13 2/3 innings with seven hits and two earned runs. Both Lee and Lincecum each allowed more hits and earned runs. The 9-0 final score in Game 2 is no indication of how the starting pitching fared; at least not in Wilson’s case.

Vladimir Guerrero makes mockery of World Series stage

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Championship, MLB,

Vladimir GuerreroFans of the Giants were probably the only ones who got anything good out of Game 1 of Wednesday’s World Series debut. That good came in the form of a win and the presence of Vladimir Guerrero. Questions regarding Guerrero’s presence in Ron Washington’s lineup were answered when Vlady showed up in right field for just the 18th time this season, and it cost his team dearly. Vlady made more mistakes than his personal score sheet will indicate, and his team lost the game.

Josh Hamilton set for first World Series

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Championship, MLB,

Josh HamiltonA month ago, Josh Hamilton was just returning from a rib cage injury that had sidelined him for the better part of September. That injury seems like ancient history to the Texas outfielder. Now, he’s expected to carry a Rangers offense through a powerful Giants pitching rotation that includes two-time National League Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum and fellow starter Matt Cain, while the bullpen crowd features Sergio Romo and Grizzly Adams-wannabe Brian Wilson.

San Francisco Giants win series, look to break history

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Championship, MLB, Playoffs,

San Francisco GiantsTalk about Giant killers. The San Francisco Giants made just about every unconventional move you could think of, and it seemed like each decision paid off. They’ll be heading to their first World Series since 1954 to face the Rangers who will be going to their first World Series ever, and without any official announcements, it’s probably safe to assume that two of the game’s best pitchers, Cliff Lee and Tim Lincecum, will be throwing first pitches for their respective teams.

Philadelphia Phillies and San Francisco Giants set for gigantic rematch in Game 5

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB, Playoffs,

Charlie ManuelAfter executing the same bit of managerial tactics that didn’t work for Joe Girardi, Charlie Manuel’s Phillies find themselves down 3-1 in their championship series against the Giants and are facing elimination. Manuel decided against using his ace Roy Halladay on short rest and opted for Joe Blanton. Despite Blanton exiting with a 4-3 lead, Manual did end up using starter Roy Oswalt in relief, who blew the lead and took the loss. Now the Phillies need to win three in a row to win their third-straight NL pennant.

Four aces set to duel in championship series

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB, Playoffs,

Tim Lincecum It is probable that the four best pitchers in baseball represent the four remaining teams in the playoffs. CC Sabathia, Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Tim Lincecum are the faces of New York, Philadelphia, Texas and San Francisco, respectively, and all four are fronting the charge to the World Series for their clubs. It’s impossible to answer which ace trumps which ace, as any game featuring any two of these stars very well may end up with a 1-0 score or left to the bullpens to decide.

Tim Lincecum starts fresh September with masterful performance

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,

Tim LincecumTim Lincecum rebounded from an 0-5 August by pitching one of his best games of the season against the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday. Lincecum was masterful in leading his team to a tight, 2-1 victory to help improve their place in the standings, and he did so against one of 2010’s best starting pitchers, Ubaldo Jimenez. A pitchers duel unfolded at AT&T Park that ended with The Freak showing why he’s a two-time defending Cy Young Award winner.

Breaking down the game early is still just as fun

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,

Miguel CabreraNow that almost every team has had a chance to complete a series and show the nation what they’ve got. It seems like the mystery that can surround Spring Training is ancient history, when really it’s only been five days. That’s the beauty of nationally televised baseball. And not only do these games matter, but managers are playing their top players. There’s nothing like April baseball, and we’re seeing it as good as it gets.

Lincecum, Giants reach two-year deal

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, Front Office, MLB,

Tim LincecumSan Francisco Giants ace Tim Lincecum is staying put. The hurler came to a two-year agreement with the Giants and avoided salary arbitration with the club and will instead put his focus towards Spring Training and the 2010 Major League Baseball season. The anticipation of having Lincecum become available on the open market will cease as the ever-improving Giants hope to make a real push towards the postseason and potentially the World Series this year, lead by their young star pitcher.

NL Cy Young Award winner - Tim Lincecum

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, Kudos, MLB,

Tim LincecumTim’s done it again. Tim Lincecum of the San Francisco Giants won his second consecutive National League Cy Young Award. Lincecum edged out the pair of St. Louis Cardinals aces, Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter. He becomes the first pitcher to repeat as the winner since Randy Johnson did so with the Diamondbacks four times from 1999-2002. It makes sense that the number one pitcher of 2008 won again, as while Lincecum’s wins total was down in 2009, he improved in almost every other area.
